Most hosting comparisons focus on price and storage. Here's what actually predicts whether you'll be happy with a host a year from now.
- Real uptime history, not just the advertised SLA. Every host claims 99.9%+. Look for independent uptime monitoring reports rather than the host's own marketing page.
- What happens after the introductory price ends. Same issue as domain renewals — check the renewal rate for hosting plans too.
- Support channel and hours. Live chat with a real response time beats a ticket queue with a 24-hour SLA, especially when your site is actually down.
- Backup frequency and restore process. Daily automated backups you can restore yourself, not just "backups available on request."
- Resource limits on shared plans. CPU/memory caps that silently throttle your site during traffic spikes are common on cheap shared hosting.
- Migration assistance. If you're moving from another host, find out whether they'll do the migration for you or if you're on your own.
- Free SSL included. This should be table stakes in 2026 — if a host charges extra for a basic SSL certificate, that's a signal about their overall pricing philosophy.
- Server location options. Matters for site speed if most of your visitors are in a specific region — see our performance guide for why this affects TTFB.
