A short checklist covering the things that quietly cause the most problems if ignored.
Domain Side
- Enable auto-renewal, or at minimum set a calendar reminder 30 days before expiry
- Keep WHOIS contact information current — it's how you get verification and renewal notices
- Use a password manager and enable 2FA on your registrar account; domain hijacking usually starts with account takeover, not a technical exploit
- Lock your domain against unauthorized transfers when you're not actively planning to move it
Hosting Side
- Confirm your host's backup system actually works by testing a restore, not just assuming backups exist
- Keep CMS/plugin software updated — most hosting-related security incidents trace back to outdated software, not the host itself
- Monitor your renewal date and rate the same way you do for your domain
- Run a PageSpeed test periodically — hosting performance can degrade over time as a provider adds more customers to shared infrastructure
